Geologic Time

The sites i used were http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/education/explorations/tours/geotime/gtpage1.html
The title of this site is called Geologic Time. It showed the different stages of geologic time and was about what eras and periods were.
The second site i used was
http://www.UCMP.berkely.edu/help/timeform.html
The title of this site was UCMP Web Time Machine. It was about how epoches work and also had a geologic time scale.
The era known as the age of the dinosaurs is the mesozic era. The carboniferous period in the palezoic is famous for coal swamps. The ordovian period was the first after the explosion of life. Modern humans first appeared in the epoch of Pleistocene. The event that marked the end of the Mesozoic ERa was a major extinction of dinosaurs. The last Ice ages in Michigan happened during the epoch of Pleistocene. The order of longest to shortest time periods are from era, period then epoch.

Floridas Sinkholes

http://plants.ifas.ufl.edu/guide/sinkholes.html
This site was about the sinkholes in Florida are formed overtime and also karst topography. The title of this site is Sinkhole.
This site was about sinkholes in Florida and how they worsen and appear in coller temperatures. The title of this site is Spate of Sinkholes Open up in Florida.
Sinkholes are caused by ground water moving through limestone in the ground, erodeing large void. When water fills the void it supports the walls and ceiling when the water drops the void gets more eroded creating the void to collapse. Florida has so many sinkholes becuase of its karst topography. Sinkholes worsen and appear in cold temps because farmers growing crops pump groundwater from wells and spray it over the crops, the water level decreases because of what the farmers have done to the plants. Besides property damage, another hazard associated with sinkholes is they contaminate groundwater.

The Nashville Floods

The sites i used were http://abcnews.go.com/WN/nashville-flash-flooding-south/story?id=10555626
The title of this article is called Nashville Flooding: At Least 29 Dead From Record Rains In Mid- South. This article was about the flash floods in Nashville. it tells how many feet above average the flood was.
The second site i used is Http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/04/us/04flood.html?src=mv
This article is called Floods Prompt Evacuations in Nashville. It talks about the flood in Nashville and how many deaths it brought about.
The cause of the flooding in Nashville was two days of drenching rain. In two days 13 inches of rain fell, flooding the cumberland river. This river was about 12 feet above flooding stage. Two flood control measures had already been placed in Nashville; These were flood control dams were built, the river was already 50 ft above sea level so this haden't really helped and the levee was built as well. This haden't helped at all because water was leeking out from it leeking into the streets of Nashville.

Oil Disaster in the Gulf

The website i used is called Http://www.washingtonpost.com/wpdyn/content/article/2010/04/26/AR2010042604308.html
The title is Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill Creates Enviornmental and Polotical Dilemmas. This website was about the oil spill in the Gulf and the many problems that its causing.
The explosion in the oil rig happened on April 22, it's suspected that a build of pressure in the extremely deep water caused the explosion.
The areas of the U.S. being impacted by the oil spill are Louisiana and Florida.
Some of the many problems of this oil spill are that the spill covers an extremely large area, even bigger than Luxemburg. It has created many enviornmental problems as well. Some problems of this are that oil could coat seabirds causeing them to have less of an ability to fly. Another problem is that it could injure marine organisms causing them to have bad respiration and bision. Lastly the Gulf of Mexico is gome to many endangered species, such as sea turtles, tuna, grouper and snapper. This oil spill could hurt or kill them causing the enviornment to become even worse.
There is about 5,000 barrels of oil leaking into the ocean each day.
People are trying to stop the oil leak by putting many tons of dispersent into the ocean to break up the oil. They are also putting up barriers for miles to protect shores. This dosent seem to be very successful because the oil is spilling non stop and polotical and enviornmental problems are worstening everyday.

Windspires

http://www.gizmag.com/windspire-low-cost-wind-power-alternative/10861/
This site was about the advantages and disadvantages of windpires
I think we should get a small windmill for GP North because there not expensive to take care of and they are good for the earth.

I think that if i were to install a windmill near my house my neighbors wouldn't like it at all. i think this because they take up lots of space and there isn't even enough space near my house to do this, their not very pretty to look at every morning and their very noisy. Even though windmills are great for the enviornment, they might not always be good for Grosse Pointe.

For the needs of my home, a windspire would be too little to benefit my family. we use about 104 Kw and out lowest was 43 Kw. This wouldn't benefit to my family because in the summer we use lots of air conditioning and in the winter months we use lots of heating for the house and also use the lights more often because its typically darker in the winter.

Kennecott or not?

www.northwoodswild.orgprojects/sulfied-and-uranium-mining
www.eagle-project.com/library/media/heartland _Institute.pdf
www.eagle-project.com/our-company21st-century-mining/
These websited were about the good and bad effects of the Kennocott plan
An AMD is acid mine drainage, it is caused by miners wanting to open up new sulfide mining areas.
concerns about AMD are water quality, would destroy land calturally significant to area tribes and more metal would be wasted instead of reused.
They will clean up mining areas by obtaing an air use permit for air emissions, national pollutant discharge elimination system, permit for treating water to surface waters, a reclamation of the facality and tailings into the existing Humboldt pit.
The benefits of the Kennocatt plan are the eagle mine and Humbolt mill projects create an estimated 500 construction jobs and 200 full time operation jobs generate millions of dollars in tax revenues.
The kennocot plan assures that it ownt harm wildlife by making sure its a safe operation, wireless routers will be instatlled at each level , with the main control dispatch center at the service. A tag reading systen will also be installed at critical areas to assure all persons are accounted for within the mine.

The Iceland Volcano

http://www.pdc.org/PDCNewsWebArticles/2010/Iceland/eruption.htm
The title of this website was Eyjafjallojokull Volcano in Iceland Errupts, Disruptive Travel, the website was about the effects of the Iceland volcano
http://www.bosotn.com/bigpicture/2010/04/icelands_disruptive_volcano.html
The title of this website was Iceland's disruptive volcano, this site had many pictures of the volcano and it was about the effects of the volcano as well.
There was a volcano erupting in iceland because of the carbon emission.
An Iceland volcano is grounding mos of air travel in Europe because the ash plume from the eruption, combined with current wind speeds, wind directions and other factors.
Negative effects of the Iceland volcano are it sent melt waters from glaciers into nearby towns, resulting in damage. Another effect is a downward trend in activity had a drop in warning level, there were evacuations as well due to flood waters.
The volcano isn't affecting the United States because its only over the atlantic ocean so it dosen't affect anywhere beyond the coast.

Canada's Wind Farms

http://www.freep.com/article/20100226/NEWS06/2260374/storm-brews-over-ontario-winds
The title of this site is Will Canada's Wind Tribunes Invade Lakes
The site was about how canadas wind farms were effecting lakes and the city where we live.
Some pros of canada's wind farms are they give green energyand boost the quality of recreational fishing. Some cons of Canada's wind farms are they are ruining the views on houses on the lake, bird migration and are making the shoreline homes drop in prices. I don' t believe that Canada should go on with this process because its making cities near Lake St. Clair and the Great Lakes lose money on houses that had beautiful views very hard to sell because the wind farms are blocking them making our city economies worse. What i could do as a citizen to fight the plan would get a group of people who know a lot about these wind farms to go to Canada and make a deal with the Canadians to take them down or not put them in the middle of the lakes .

Earthquake

http://www.iris.edu/seismon/
Febuary 6, 2010
The name of this article was Seismonci Moniter. It was about how frequently and where earthquakes occur.
There have been 10 earthquakes that have happened all around the world today. The most recent earthquake that happened in the United States was near the Coast of Northern Calif on Febuary 4th. The state that seems to have the most earthquakes is California. The most earthquakes in South America seem to occur in Tanzanla. As you move from west to east across south america the earthquakes stop, there are none there.
